Anaya Confides in Her Boss

Anaya Confides in Her Boss

“Anaya, I meant to ask you since Monday but things have been crazy around here because of month-end. How was your weekend?” Azariah asked. It was Friday and they were in the office. He had stopped by her desk.

“It was good.”

“Are you sure? You don’t sound or look like you had a good weekend.”

Anaya sighed. “You’re right. It wasn’t a good weekend. Jamel and I had dinner with his late friend’s ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend.”

“Okay. This sounds complicated. Why don’t we go to my office and talk about it?”

“Sure. I’m going to make myself a cup of tea, would you like some?”

“Sure. Thanks.” He handed her his mug.

Anaya left his office and went to the kitchenette to make the tea. She took the two steaming mugs back to this office. He closed the door and sat behind his desk after she sat down in one of the chairs in front of it. She let her tea cool for a bit while she told them about the dinner. “I couldn’t shake the feeling that although Sharita was with Sadiq, she had her eye on Jamel.”

“You think that she’s interested in him?”

“Yes. Who can blame her? Jamel is quite a catch but Sadiq seemed really nice.”

“So, Sharita used to date Jamel’s friend who is now dead?”

“Yes. Apparently the same day Rashad died, he was going to ask her to marry him.”

“Wow. Poor man.”

“Jamel was pretty cut up about his death. He said that Rashad was like a brother. I wonder, though, if Sharita would have married him.”

“You don’t think she would have?”

“I’m not sure. It’s possible that she might have. Anyway, she has moved on with her life but I don’t think she’s into Sadiq, though. Poor guy. If she isn’t into him, she should do the decent thing and end the relationship.”

“Maybe she will.”

“And what happens if she does? Is she going to go after Jamel?”

“You think she’s the type of woman who would go after another woman’s boyfriend?”

“I think she is because I noticed the way she looked at Jamel.”

“Have you shared any of this with Jamel?”

“No. I don’t want him to think that I’m insecure.”

“Are you?”

“I don’t think so but I felt uneasy both times Sharita was there. I honestly think that she has her sights on Jamel.”

“Do you want my advice?”

“Sure.”

“Talk to Jamel. Let him know how you feel. Talking to him may help and convince you that even if Sharita has her eye on him, you have nothing to worry about because he’s into you.”

“All right, you’ve convinced me. I’ll talk to him when I see him tomorrow.”

“I don’t know what Sharita looks like but I bet that she isn’t beautiful like you.”

“You think I’m beautiful?”

“Yes and I’m sure Jamel does as well.”

“Well, he’s never told me that I’m beautiful.”

“Well, he should.”

Anaya smiled. “Thanks, Azariah. I’m so glad that we had this talk.”

“You’re welcome, Anaya. I’m available anytime you need to talk.”

“That’s good to know. Well, I’d better get to work.”

“Did you bring lunch?”

“Actually, I was in such a rush this morning, that I forgot it on the kitchen counter. By the time I remembered, I was on the train.”

“Well, you’re welcome to join me for lunch. We can go to The Capital Grille or we can order take out and have it in here. Let me know what you prefer.”

“I will.”

“Good.”

She left his office and returned to her desk, smiling.
