Derrick Finds Out About Cate’s New Beau

Derrick Finds Out About Cate’s New Beau

“I spoke to Gladys today and do you know what she told me?” Amelie said to Derrick.

“What did she tell you?”

“Cate is dating again.” She watched him closely to see his reaction.

“Really? That’s good.”

“So, it doesn’t bother you?”

“Why should it?”

“I don’t know. I just wondered if it does.”

“Well, it doesn’t. I’m happy that Cate has moved on with her life.”

“Gladys said that he’s a writer. He wrote the novel, “A Warrior’s Pilgrimage.”

Derrick glanced at her. “That’s the book I lent Gladys. It’s one of my favorites.”

“Gladys and Edward have invited Cate and him to have dinner with them.”

“I’d like to meet him and get his autograph. He has written several novels and I have read all of them. I’m curious to find out if he will be writing another one soon.”

“Are you sure that’s the only reason why you want to meet him?”

“I wonder how Cate and he met.”

“Didn’t Gladys tell you?”

“She was going to when she got another call.”

“Well, you can always ask her the next time you talk to her.”

“Since you’re so anxious to meet this new man in her life, why don’t we accept Gladys’ invitation to have dinner with them?”

“Gladys invited us to have dinner with Cate and her new beau?”

“Yes. Shouldn’t she have?”

“I’m just surprised that she did.”

“You mean because of your past affair with Cate?”

“Well, that’s all over with, isn’t it? She’s moved on with her life. You and I have a son and we’re expecting our second child.”

“Yes. What Cate and I had is in the past.”

“I wonder if this relationship of hers will lead to marriage.”

“It’s possible.”

“And if this new man of hers will want to have children.”

“Why wouldn’t he?”

Amelie shrugged. “No reason. Most men want children, don’t they?”

“Most of them, yes but there are some who don’t. And, that’s fine. Like marriage, parenthood isn’t for everyone. As long as people are happy and satisfied with their lives, that’s all that really matters.”

Amelie placed her hand on her slightly swollen abdomen. “I guess you’re right.” She couldn’t help wondering what would happen if Cate’s new boyfriend found out that she couldn’t have children. Maybe he will dump her. As long as Cate didn’t interfere with her marriage, she didn’t care what happened to her. “Do you think Cate is cut out for marriage and motherhood?”

Derrick shrugged. “I don’t see why not.”

“Frankly, I don’t think she is but, that’s just my opinion.”

“Do you still hate Cate because of my affair with her?”

“I don’t hate Cate, Derrick but I don’t like her. The less I see of her or hear about her, the better.”

“You were the one who mentioned her.”

“I know. I just thought that you would want to hear that she had a new man in her life.”

“Admit it, Baby, that the only reason why you told me about Cate is you were curious to see what my reaction would be.”

“All right, I admit it. I just wanted to make sure that you’re really over her.”

“I am. What would it take to convince you?”

“I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t still be jealous of her.”

He went over to her and taking her by the shoulders, he drew her to her feet. “I promise, you have no reason to be jealous of Cate. You’re my woman and I love you. Cate and I are just family because of Edward and Gladys.”

Amelie put her arms around his waist and pressed against him. “I love you too, Honey and you’re right. It’s foolish of me to be jealous of Cate.” Especially as she can’t have children and here I am pregnant with Derrick’s second child. No, rather than being jealous of her, I should feel sorry for her because no man is going to want a woman who can’t have children.

Derrick lowered his head and kissed her. They kissed for several minutes and then, he picked her up and carried her to their bedroom. Their son was sleeping and wasn’t due to wake up from his nap any time soon.
