Monifa Tells Father Kiesler about His Mother’s Visit

“Did you have a chance to see your mother when she was here yesterday, Father Kiesler?” Gretel asked him when he went into the office that morning.

He stared at her. “My mother was here yesterday?”

“Yes. She came to the office and asked to see Monifa. I wasn’t here but Sister Paschek was. She offered to go and fetch Monifa while Mrs. Kiesler waited for her in the Choir Loft. Didn’t Sister Paschek say anything to you?”

Father Kiesler shook his head. “No, she didn’t say anything to me about my mother’s visit.”

“It must have slipped her mind.”

“Yes, it must have,” he agreed. Why had his mother come to see Monifa and why hadn’t Monifa mentioned anything to him? “Gretel, I’ll be back shortly. I need to take care of something.”

“Sure, Father Kiesler.”

He left the office and went to their secret room. As usual, Monifa was already there. She was stooping down and didn’t get to her feet. Right away, he could tell that something was wrong. “What’s the matter?”

“Did my mother visit you a couple of days ago?”

“Why didn’t you tell me? I had to hear about it from Gretel who found out about it from Sister Paschek.”

“I’m sorry.”

“What did my mother want, Monifa?”

Monifa hesitated and then, she told him everything. “She wants me out of your life, Jürgen.”

“Is that what you want too?” he demanded, his expression tense.

“No. It isn’t what I want but…”

“But, what?”

“Maybe I should do the right thing and get out of your life so that you could be what you were meant to be–a priest.”

“How could you getting out of my life be the right thing for me, Monifa?”

“Your mother thinks it’s the right thing for me to do–“

“Do you agree with her?”

“No, but she loves you–“

“Do you love me?”

“Of course, I love you, Jürgen. I love you so much.” Her voice trembled slightly and she was very close to tears.

“And I love you. I love you so very much that it would kill me if you walked out of my life. I thought my future was with the church until I met and fell in love with you. Now, I want to leave the priesthood for you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I can be your husband and still serve God.”

“But what about your mother? I don’t want to ruin your relationship with her.”

“If my relationship with my mother is ruined it won’t be your fault.”

“I feel so bad. She’s your mother.”

“Yes, she’s my mother and I love her dearly but you’re the love of my life, Monifa. I can’t, no, I refuse to let you walk out of my life.” He pulled her to her feet. His expression was fierce when he met her tear filled eyes. “My mind is made up and nothing my mother says or does is going to change it. I love you and I want to marry you. I thought that becoming a priest was God’s plan for me but I realize now that it was how I was supposed to meet you. I’m not meant to spend the rest of my life as priest.”

“Are you sure this is what you want?”

“Yes! I want you.”

“Oh, Jürgen…” she cried. “I never want to be separated from you.”

“Mein Liebling, I promise you that nothing or no one will ever come between us.”

Nodding, she put her arms around his waist and pressed against him.

He hugged her tightly and they stayed like that for a while before they made love for the last time in their secret room.
